What is a low fat diet? A low fat diet restricts fats, especially saturated and transfats. You may have had a doctor advise you to go on a low fat diet, to avoid obesity, which is a risk factor for diabetes, stroke, heart disease, liver disease, immobility, and problems breathing and sleeping. The American Heart Association recommends reducing saturated fat to no more than 5 to 6 percent of total calories.
For short-term weight loss, a diet of lowfat meals is effective. But keep in mind that fat is used by our bodies for blood clotting, controlling inflammation, energy, healthy skin and hair, and absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K. Lowering saturated fats in our diets and eliminating transfats is the healthiest choice. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are known as "healthy fats", and can actually be good for the heart. Food choices with healthy fats are avocados, nuts, olives and olive oil, salmon and tuna, and dark chocolate.
Saturated fats come from meat and dairy foods. Transfats are found in margarines and shortenings, fried fast foods like fries and fish sticks, biscuits, and breakfast sandwiches.
Watching nutritional labels is the key to keeping to a diet of low fat meals, along with using apps like My Fitness Pal, Calorie Counter & Food Diary or many others.
A study by the Agricultural Research Center (ARS) found that people who consumed low fat foods had a more varied and nutritious diet than those who didn't. On the whole, those who ate three or more low fat foods daily consumed more vitamin A, carotene, folate, calcium and iron than those who did not consume low fat foods.
Here are some tips for sticking to a low fat diet plan:
- Read labels! If an item has more than 10% fat, don't buy it.
- Watch the serving size on the label. Many foods that come as a single portion actually contain multiple servings. A serving from a bag of chips is usually about 11 chips, but we usually eat the whole bag as a portion.
- Drink lots of water. It keeps you hydrated, and helps to fill you up. It also replaces high-calorie drinks, which is good for you!
- Cut down on portion size. Figure out where most of the fat and calories lurk in a meal, and cut down on that piece of food. Eat 3 oz of steak instead of 4, for example.
