Obesity May Shorten Your Life by Four Years

If you want to live a long and healthy life, packing extra weight around your belly, hips, thighs, buttocks, and internal organs, isn't going to be doing you any favors. In fact, being obese may cut your life short by four years compared to healthy weight people, according to a recent study published in the American Journal of Public Health.

Researchers looked at health data for about 5,000 people in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey over a six-year period. They found that being obese increased the risk of death by 20 percent, with heart disease among the leading causes of death for obese people. They also found that obese people were more likely to die about 3.7 years earlier than healthy-weight people.

In addition, obese people ages 45 to 64 showed an even greater risk for early death. Obese people in this group died 7.1 years earlier from health-related issues and up to 12.8 years earlier from heart disease, according to the study.

Obesity is a major health crisis in the United States. An estimated 68 percent of all adults in the U.S. are overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Weight-related problems have become such a major public health issue and financial burden associated with rising healthcare costs, the American Medical Association classified obesity as a chronic disease last year.
